WSU Governor Mark Gaffney

Meet

"I have spent my whole adult life in Michigan's labor movement, helping people young and old to improve their quality of life. In the past eight years as a member of the Board of Governors of WSU, I have been honored to help the students of our state as they work toward success. There is still much that can be done to continue to make WSU a great institution, and I ask for the support of Michigan's voters to continue this work."

- Mark Gaffney

COMMITTED UNIVERSITY LEADER

While serving Michigan residents and the students as an incumbent elected member of the WSU Board of Governors, I worked hard to understand the issues facing education and families today. The university continued to deliver quality learning opportunities despite the COVID pandemic, rising costs, administrative changes, and Michigan's challenges. As chairman of the WSU Board of Governors in 2022 and 2023 I helped guide the university in becoming a national leader in social mobility, increased graduation rates, and provided better accessibility for lower-income families. By working together, we moved Wayne State University Forward.

EXPERIENCED VOICE FOR WORKING FAMILIES

represented 750,000 active and retired union members, in over 40 affiliated unions as President of the Michigan State AFL-CIO. I worked as an organizer and business agent for Teamsters Local 486 and later, Teamsters Joint Council No. 43 as the Joint Council’s Legislative and Community Affairs Director. I serve as a board member for the United Way of Michigan, a co-chair of the Economic Alliance of Michigan, a trustee of the Michigan Council on Economic Education, and a board member of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan.
